As luck has it, the twins are in the same dorm room again. Neither of them had asked for it, for once, but apparently their parents had found it in their hearts to pull some strings behind the scenes and get their children one of the nicer dorms. Kao puts his suitcase full of brand new clothes on his bed, opens it, closes it, and then shoves it under the bed.
Evan sighs, not exactly mourning the loss of his old dorm but still kind of missing it. "Do you want to go do something?" He asks his brother out of boredom and desperation.
Kao shrugs. "Sure. Want to go see Fivel?" Evan grinds his teeth in silent annoyance. Ever since that Fathom incident his brother had been following that girl around like a dog. That wasn't the only thing that had changed. His brother had come back gaunt from days of being in a coma and a kind of solemnness suddenly hung over him like a cloak. Unable to be anything but thankful that Kao had been miraculously returned to him, Evan hadn't noticed that anything was different for days. Now the cracks are starting to show.
"If you want to." Evan says, trying to mimic his normal willing tone. Lying to Kao had always been impossible, but faking little things was suddenly getting easier. Kao looks at him questioningly and Evan realizes to late that 'if you want to' was not a normal phrase for either of them. It had always sounded to uncaring for them. "Come on, have you changed your mind?" Evan grins as he pulls on his shoes and leads the way out the door.
"No, course not." Kao mumbles, still feeling a bit doubtful, but accepting his brothers slip up anyway. "Stop at the kitchen on the way?"
"Excellent."
The twins show up at Fivel's door a few minutes later, Kao holding a load of fancy danishes that he's sure Fivel has never been able to try but will love and Evan holding a muffin because it would look weird if he was the only one not carrying anything. "Open up!" Kao yells through the door. "We come bearing gifts."
